The Green Dream Team!

National Golf Club's 2010 Ladies' Member/Guest.

The underdog team of Karen Finegold, Anne Richter, Susie Points, and Marcy Points made their first ever appearance as a team and finished quite respectably! First Place low net, second place low gross. In keeping with the "Teetime in Wonderland" theme, the winners all went home with beautiful hand-made teapots from Seagrove, NC. We will be back next year to defend!

New Bern, NC Mini Trip

After dropping Rick at the airport, JoAnne and Ralph motored to New Bern where they stayed at the Springhill Suites by Marriott. Pepsi Cola was invented in New Bern by a druggist and soda fountain operator. It also served as the first capital of North Carolina. The beautiful Tryon Palace was the home of the Governor. They chartered a boat and for two hours, cruised the two rivers that meet at New Bern. The "house" on the river belongs to author, Nicholas Sparks. The bird on the post is an Osprey. They ate some excellent food and are now planning their next mini vacation.

Winners!

The results of the National Golf Club's 2010 Member/Guest Tournament are in and the winners are...............team McDaniel/Finegold (affectionately called the McFinegold's), with a gross score of 63 and net, 53.8!! The format was Captain's Choice with all members contributing. Overheard at dinner was Bill McDaniel commenting on his wife Mary Kay's skill, "I've played a lot of golf over the years, but never have I seen anyone whiff a putt!"

The dinner dance was a country western theme, and tho not winning "best costume", Norman made a pretty mean looking hombre in his KC Stetson!

Mini Vacation

JoAnne and Ralph spent a very relaxing three days at the Sanderling Inn and Spa in Duck on the North Carolina Outer Banks. The weather cooperated and the food at the Inn's two restaurants was delightful. One of the restaurants was a converted Life Saving Station dating back to the mid 1800's.

She Graduated!

It was a great celebration in Oxford this weekend despite a bit of ridiculously cold, windy weather. First, friday night we celebrated at a great restaurant in Cincinnati with Grace's and Jamie's family. Saturday, was "whole school" graduation followed by a catered BBQ that all the housemates organized for family members. The weather did not cooperate, unfortunately, leaving 30+ people crammed into less than ideal conditions inside the girl's house. Sunday was beautiful, and we attended the business school's very impressive ceremony. Each graduate of the business school left with a share of stock in the Danaher Company (today, worth about $80) given to them by the speaker, Mitchell Rales, a Miami Alum and founder of the corporation. His request to the students was to hold on to the stock for at least 15 years. His message was all about focusing on the long term.

The Easter Bunny can NOT be Trusted.

Today I had a motion to suppress on a possession of marijuana case. This is a pretrial hearing to determine whether evidence (in this case the drugs) was seized legally. My client was pulled over, asked for ID, arrested on a warrant for traffic tickets, and his car was searched and the police found marijuana inside the instrument panel of the car. In a case like this, the State has the burden to prove that the officers havd reasonable suspicion to stop the vehicle, that the arrest warrants were valid, and that the search that followed the arrest was valid and reasonable.

The officer testified that he was dispatched to the scene in response to a 911 call from a citizen who identified himself as "The Easter Bunny" stating that my client was dealing drugs out of a green cadillac with a tan leather top. Police found the green car and pulled him over.

Officer, did you speak with the Easter Bunny yourself?
--No ma'am.
And do you know the Easter Bunny personally?
--No ma'am.
And do you have any other evidence to support a belief that the Easter Bunny is a trustworthy person?
--No ma'am.
Have you ever even met the Easter Bunny?
--Well, when I was seven, in the mall...
And on that date, did the Easter Bunny prove to be worthy of your trust?
--No, ma'am. (sounding slightly disappointed) I don't even know if that was him.

The judge granted my motion, suppressed the drugs, and the case was dismissed because The Easter Bunny can not legally be a trustworthy informant in a criminal case in Dallas County.

Tales from the trenches

On today's bond docket I had a young girl, about 17 years old, really small 5'2" maybe 98 lbs, and she was caught stealing at a certain discount retailer which can be found in all 50 states, and is the complaining witness in I would say 70% of all of my theft cases. The Loss Prevention officer brought her back to the office and began to take her information when she just went crazy. Hurling obscenities, kicking, punching. The security guard tried to restrain her and she bit him, breaking the skin. Eventually the real police were called and she was handcuffed and thrown in the patrol car. At which point she kicked out the window of the patrol car. AWESOME!!
We're going to try to do some kind of conditional dismissal on this girl because she wants to join the military. Our country needs this girl.

Evening at the Krankota/Grinter household

Short, but awesome. Please note her positively tremendous vintage Avengers shirt. I would saw off my own hand for a shirt like that in my size.

Ralph's New Toy

Barkley has his Bat Mobile and now Ralph has his — a 2010 Lexus HS 250h Premium hybrid (gas/electric). He purchased it from a friend who is being transferred to Singapore. It has 3,000 miles on it. It is equipped with front and rear cameras. warning signals, a navigation system, voice controls for most functions, an assistance system similar to GM's "On Star' and other things Ralph is still discovering.

Dispatch from Dallas

Things in Dallas have changed dramatically since the new year began. All of her hard work has finally paid off because as of two days ago, Ms. Catherine Grinter Krankota is mobile! Crawling and pulling herself up to stand wherever she goes, Catherine is no longer content to sit still and play. Mike and I will be spending the weekend tying back cords and covering outlets.

In other, and nearly as exciting news, I started work in the Dallas County Public Defender's office on Tuesday. this is a job that I have coveted for years, and I am having a truly fantastic time defending a large volume of clients without the hassle and uncertainty that comes with marketing, billing, and law office administration. I have a secretary, a team of investigators, and about 85 other attorneys working along side me. I am in absolute heaven, and I hope I stay in this job until retirement.

Rub A Dub Dub

Layla and I have discovered a new park-- this one is only about 2 minutes away from the apartment and much better lit than the big park. This one is actually a playground and Ben has been telling me to take her there for weeks but when I heard playground I imagined all pavement. So as a result, on the below zero days, poor miss Layla doesn't get her daily romp. However, this playground has a good sized patch of grass perfect for a quick ball throw so we have been having tons of fun. It was raining like crazy yesterday and when we went to the playground this morning (I have the day off for MLK day) it was super muddy. I didn't take a before picture but she looked like she had been tarred and feathered (hehe no pun intended. That's not true. I was trying to make a joke.)

So Layla got a bath when we got home. Now Layla is not opposed to baths (see the picture of her getting a bath with me this summer) but afterwards she gets chilly.

Typically, she gets a blow out post bath but since the heat was blasting in the apartment, she decided to cuddle up in my towel for awhile.

Not So Bad

Spending time in Pinehurst as the only one under 50 definitely has it's disadvantages. No one around after 10pm. Conversations that tend to revolve around dogs, diets, and golf. And, lack of 21st century technology (specifically large flat screen TV's with 100's of channels and impressive collections of interesting DVD's.) BUT, it also has it's advantages. Just ask Grace. She's a rock star! The center of attention wherever she goes, adoring fans begging to have their pictures taken with her, and invitations to every party. It's an enviable life, that's for sure.

Shades of Sandy

Readers of the Gazette may recall that Sandy was known for grabbing and eating the kitchen counter wipes. Last Friday our 18" X 13" wipe disappeared. It was thick and red and hardly something that would be easy to hide. We searched high and low with no success and suspected that Barkley may have eaten it. It failed to make a reappearance for several days so Barkley made a trip to the Vet's. X-rays showed a bulge in his stomach which might have been the wipe. Late in the afternoon the Vet called to say they spotted some red material in his poop, so the odds were good that he had in fact eaten it. They decided to keep him overnight and feed him mineral oil in order to try to grease the skids. If that didn't work they would have to remove it surgically. This morning the Vet called to say Barkley had barfed the towel up. It was in one piece and the Vet couldn't believe he was able to get rid of it. Throughout the whole time Barkley was as happy as a clam.
